It can be overwhelming when it comes time to shop for diamond engagement rings. Even before you factor in all of the emotional pressure that goes along with what is arguably the biggest decision in a person’s life, there is the sheer number of rings to choose from. I should know. As an accountant, I work with numbers all the time, and when I was starting to look at diamond engagement rings for my girlfriend, I had a little fun with math. Just multiplying the number of different standard cuts of diamonds by the different types of precious metals used for the rings gave me thousands of options to choose from, and that was just for a basic diamond engagement ring. That didn’t include multiple stones, or unique settings.
Looking at that information helped me make a decision I had been wavering about. Instead of choosing a ring that was already designed, I was going to design the ring on my own. I had done enough research to know that custom designed jewelry is no longer reserved for those with lots of money to spend and time to wait. Many pieces of handmade jewelry can be completed in just a matter of weeks, and the cost is usually just about the same as buying a pre-made piece of jewelry.
I talked with the artisan at the local jewelry store and told him both the type of diamond engagement ring my girlfriend would like and the budget that I was working with. He took me step by step through the process, starting with the size, cut, color and clarity of the diamonds that I could choose from, the different materials that would make up the band they were mounted on, and then any additional flourishes I had in mind. Once we had a basic idea, in just a few minutes, he created a 3-D model on his computer. Looking at that, we decided on the finishing touches.
Three weeks later, I got the call and went down to see the ring. It looked exactly like the one I had pictured in my head. I couldn’t be happier, and when I tell her it’s truly a one of a kind ring, I know she will love it that much more.
