Journey Through Time

By: Vanscoy Diamonds

Let’s take a moment and follow the abridged journey of this summer’s blockbuster, the Man of Steel, with British leading man Henry William Dalgliesh Cavill, as Superman/Kal-El. While you may know that Superman is one of the oldest comic book superheroes did you realize it was created in 1933 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two high school students from Cleveland, Ohio? They sold Superman to Detecive Comics, Inc (DC Comics) in 1938. Superman’s well-known fictional journey being one of the few survivors of the planet Krypton and being adopted by the Kent family in Kansas only to grow into adulthood and move to the big city of Metropolis while masquerading as a reporter to hide his secret identity. How many people can relate to aspirations of becoming something bigger than what they perceive themselves to be at a young age? This can be symbolized in our lovely Van Scoy progressive white gold diamond journey pendant. Leaping ahead several decades past the Adventures of Superman TV series with George Reeves, the original Superman movies with Christopher Reeve, our journey takes us to the successful reinvention of the comic book movie franchise arguably achieved by Bryan Singer when he broke the taboo of corny comic book movies with X-Men in 2000, soon followed by Christopher Nolan and his reboot with Batman Begins in 2005. Introducing Henry Cavill to our review, he was familiar with both success and ‘missed’ chances.  In 2002 while just 17 years-old casting agents placed Henry in the role of Albert Mondego in The Count of Monte Cristo opposite Jim Caviezel (Person of Interest) and Guy Pierce (Iron Man 3). After that some successes and disappointments, typical Hollywood fare, would present themselves to Henry. He tried for, but failed, to land the role of Cedric Diggory in The Goblet of Fire which was awarded to Robert Patterson, was passed over for the role of James Bond in Casino Royale in favor for Daniel Craig as he appeared too young in 2006 and was passed over for the role of Superman Returns also in 2006. Having lost these pivotal roles lead Empire Magazine to dub him the “Most Unlucky Man in Hollywood,” but Henry soon shook that tick by landing the role as Charles Brandon, First Duke of Suffolk, in the show Tudors from 2007-2010 earning a Golden Globe. In 2007/2008 Henry missed landing the role of Edward Cullen for the movie adaptation of Twilight, even though Stephanie Meyers described him as ‘perfect,’ once again losing to Robert Patterson, but this time for looking too old to play a 17 year-old. This could be categorized as a blessing in disguise as the Twilight series, while popular, has raised the ire of the internet—expressed in near endless memes, criticism by feminist, those who love the iconic vampire image and a disturbing amount of cougar-mom fandom. Sometimes the phrase ‘Any publicity is good publicity’ doesn’t really apply and now Mr. Cavill has happily avoided being attached to this franchise. Now, with the apparent success of Man of Steel, the future of Superman appears set with Henry Cavill already signed on for the planned sequels. In July 2013, at the San Diego Comic-con, Director Zach Snyder confirmed that Superman and Batman would be meeting for the first time! How these stories have unfolded in order to bring about great entertainment can be mind boggling. Now looking back through your own journeys you can think of both the good and the bad and how they brought you to where you are today. Celebrate that! Have a reminder that your journey is still being forged, like with this white gold diamond spiral pendant from Van Scoy, as your go through life your own story touches back around to those from your past and will make connections to those in your future.
